5.1 Assess student learning
Demonstrate understanding of assessment strategies, including informal and formal, diagnostic, formative and summative approaches to assess student learning.
Throughout all the lessons I taught I constantly assessed students using informal strategies and told them where they were excelling and where they needed to improve. I used language such as “what else could you do?” to encourage students to delve deeper into their thinking about each task. This links to higher-order thinking and is just one strategy I used.
At my most recent placement I assessed student learning through the use of a test. The students were pre-tested prior to me starting and I tested them at the end of the mathematics unit. I used the data collected to show the students where they had improved over the unit and where they still needed to improve.
