3.5 Use effective classroom communication
Demonstrate a range of verbal and non-verbal communication strategies to support student engagement.
Throughout my placement I became increasingly confident in my classroom management and communication skills. I endeavored to learn all my students’ names within the first two days so that they could see that I respected them as learners and in-turn they respected me as their teacher and engaged in the lesson. At the beginning of my placement I asked students that every time they answered a question they started off with their name. As the students were going to camp the week after I left I asked them to say their name then one thing they were excited about camp. This worked well and within one day I knew majority of the students’ names.
In previous placements I have asked students to write their names on place cards and have them on their desks. I prefer to get to know the students individually and take an interest in them so that they show me the same respect.
